It may be the luck of the catch or luck of the motel?
We our proud to say that the last 2 winners of Ucluelet’s Ladder Salmon Derby’s fish off have stayed at the West Coast Motel.
2011
Rich Allen of Mount Vernon, WA won the derby this year with 41 lbs 09 oz salmon on September 10, 2011 fishing with Pacific Waters Sports Fishing. It was the biggest catch of the day and soon became the largest fish of the fish off. Rich took home $6500 cash, a Lowrance Fishfinder & GPS chart plotter(including maps donated by Port Boat House),Black Rock Oceanfront Resort (2 nights’ accommodation plus a $200 cash voucher), Spirit Bear Salmon Charters (3ppl 8 hour charter including derby tickets) and Dan Dowell of Pacific Waters donated a plaque to award to this year’s winner. Rich quoted in his local newspaper “The Argus” on the experience and stated “It was unbelievable”. Him and his daughter both qualified for the fish off and Rich has been fishing in Ucluelet for the past 7 years and staying at our Motel. Congratulations Rich and thanks for choosing our always choosing us!
2010
Colin Campbell of Port Coquitlam won the derby last year with secured the victory Sunday by landing a 24-pound, six ounce spring salmon in an area known as the Southwest Corner, near Ucluelet fishing with guide Ken Myers, owner of Fishmyster Charters. Interviewed by Kevin Drews “It’s a good feeling I’ll tell you,” Campbell said when he learned about his victory during the official close of the fish off. Campbell said he hooked the salmon just after noon and took about 10 to 12 minutes to reel it in. “I didn’t think it was that big until we got it to the boat,” he said. “Then we knew we had a good one.”. Campbell won $8,000 in cash, plus an overnight package at the Pacific Rim Motel and a two-day fishing package with Aquamarine Adventures. Campbell said he’s going to have a good time with the money. Susan Hyatt, Campbell’s partner, said this was the couple’s seventh trip to Ucluelet. She said they have always stayed at the West Coast Motel, have always used Myers as a guide and always stay in the same room.

If your visit to Ucluelet involves sport fishing, please ensure that you have made arrangements for storage of your catch. Options are with your fishing charter captain, in your vehicle or bringing them to either of the 2 companies here in town that can vacuum pack and freeze fish. Fishfull Thinking – 250-726-2000. Far West Foods 250-726-7767 or 726-4404. Both are located close to the motel. St. Jean’s Cannery has locations in Port Alberni, Nanaimo and Vancouver – for those of you interested in canning your catch. You will not be permitted to bring your catch or gear into your unit, under any circumstances. Outside is not an option due to bears and raccoons. Fishermen, who do not utilize the fish processor, should store on ice inside a locked vehicle or store with your fishing charter captain. You are welcome to bring in a piece of fish that is “grocery-store ready” (ie it has been cleaned and scaled at the fish cleaning station) to cook in your kitchenette (if you book one) or on the BBQ at the cookshack.
